If you’re dreaming of a tropical getaway filled with crystal-clear water, scenic beaches, incredible food, and some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see, then Oʻahu deserves a spot on your travel list.

Although many people immediately think of Waikiki when planning a Hawaii trip, some of my favorite memories came from exploring quieter parts of the island, especially the west side and the North Shore. From snorkeling with tropical fish to finding the best banana bread on the island, this trip felt like the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. I can confidently say that Hawaii is now one of my favorite places ever.

Here’s my full Oʻahu travel guide with all the places I visited, what I loved, and what I would recommend if you’re planning your own trip.

Where We Stayed: Mākaha Valley

We stayed at an Airbnb in Mākaha Valley, located on the west side of Oʻahu. The area felt peaceful, quiet, and much less crowded than Honolulu or Waikiki.

There are several beautiful beaches nearby, especially along the west coast, and the sunsets here were some of the best we saw on the island.

While there isn’t as much to do directly in the area compared to Honolulu or the North Shore, it’s perfect if you want a slower and more relaxing atmosphere.

One of the biggest highlights nearby was Mākua Beach, which quickly became one of my favorite beaches on the trip. The views here are stunning, and it’s an incredible place to watch the sunset.

The Airbnb was one hour away from everything, so It was a bit of drive, but it didn't feel long at all because we would be exploring places along the way.

Exploring Honolulu

Although we didn’t stay in Honolulu, we spent some time driving through the area and visiting the beach for sunset.

The city has a completely different energy compared to the west side of the island. There are great stores for shopping, lots of restaurants, and a more lively atmosphere overall. Even though we only spent a short amount of time there, it’s definitely worth visiting during your trip.

Kualoa Ranch and the Chinese Hat

One of the most scenic places we visited was Kualoa Ranch and the nearby regional park where you can see the famous Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat).

The views here honestly look unreal. Some people were kayaking and even hiking to the small island, which looked like such a fun experience. If you’re more adventurous, this would definitely be worth adding to your itinerary.

Best Beaches and Snorkeling Spots

Electric Beach

Electric Beach was one of the best snorkeling spots we visited. Because of the nearby power plant, there’s a warm current in the water that attracts large amounts of fish, making it an incredible place to snorkel.

The water was clear, and there was so much marine life to see.

Mermaid Caves

Located near the west side, Mermaid Caves is another beautiful place for swimming and snorkeling. The water here was gorgeous, and the area felt much less crowded than other tourist spots.

Shark’s Cove

If you enjoy snorkeling, Shark’s Cove on the North Shore is a must-visit. The rocky coastline creates clear pools filled with fish, making it one of the most unique snorkeling experiences on the island.

Pipeline

Pipeline Beach was absolutely stunning. Even if you don’t surf, it’s worth visiting just to experience the atmosphere and watch the waves.

Turtle Bay

We also spent time at Turtle Bay, which had a calmer and more relaxing feel. It’s a beautiful beach to walk around and enjoy the scenery.

Best Sunset Spots

Oʻahu sunsets truly feel unreal, and these were some of my favorite places to watch them:

  • Kaiaka Bay Beach Park

  • Waimea Bay

  • Mākua Beach

Each location had a completely different atmosphere, but all of them had beautiful golden light and incredible ocean views.

Coffee Shops and Food Stops

Saylor’s Coffee

This was easily my favorite coffee shop on the trip. The coffee was amazing, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and local.

Green World Coffee Farm

Green World Coffee Farm was such a fun stop. It’s a great place to grab fresh coffee and pick up souvenirs while driving around the island.

Dole Plantation

The Dole Plantation was fun to stop at, although it felt more like a quick pit stop than a full activity. Still, it’s worth visiting if you’re already nearby.

Foodland Poke Bowls

One of the best inexpensive meals we had came from Foodland. Their poke bowls were fresh, flavorful, affordable, and surprisingly large portions.

Honestly, this became one of our favorite quick meals during the trip.

Makua Banana Bread

The banana bread here was incredible and easily one of the best things we ate on the island. If you’re driving through the North Shore, this is absolutely worth stopping for.

Surf N Salsa

This food truck was another favorite. The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfect after spending the day at the beach.

Hiking the Lanikai Pillbox Trail

One of the hikes we did was the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, which I would describe as moderate but completely worth it.

The views from the top overlook the ocean and the Mokulua Islands, and it’s easily one of the most scenic hikes on the island.

Visiting the Disney Resort

We also visited Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, which was beautiful to walk around. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s a nice place to visit and enjoy the beach area nearby.

Final Thoughts

Oʻahu ended up being one of the most beautiful and diverse places I’ve ever visited. One moment you’re snorkeling in crystal-clear water, and the next you’re driving through lush mountains or watching the sunset from a quiet beach.

What I loved most about this trip was how different every part of the island felt. From the peaceful west side to the lively energy of Honolulu and the laid-back atmosphere of the North Shore, there’s truly something for everyone. Plus, the locals where so nice! Everyone is truly very happy.

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii, I would absolutely recommend exploring beyond the typical tourist spots. Some of the most memorable places ended up being the quieter beaches, local coffee shops, and hidden stops along the drive.
